About the Webinar The subject of music publishing is not only one of the most topical issues of the music industry in Nigeria today but has been a huge missing part in the debates on the structure of the Nigerian music industry. With the exponential rise of music industry in Nigeria, music publishing has been generally regarded by right holders, industry practitioners and experts as one of the most valued creative assets and source of wealth. While it has more economic significance than it has been accorded, recent realities are increasingly showing a gradual paradigm shift towards the emergence of music publishing as a viable sector in the music industry. Recognizing the importance of music publishing sector in music and copyright administration system, this webinar seeks to explore the uncharted terrain of music publishing in Nigeria and address a whole lot of questions surrounding this important sector. Pertinent questions like what is music publishing all about?, Is it recognized and protected by copyright law?, if so, why has it not been an integral part of the structure of music industry in Nigeria? Is the Nigerian music industry ripe or prepared for music publishing? How can this important sector be activated? What role can key stakeholders including the newly formed Music Publishers Association of Nigeria (MPAN), producers/record labels, performing right organisations (PROs) and others play?
The panel of speakers and industry experts, is rich and diverse and will explore these and more questions on this important topic in the Nigerian creative economy. The L & A webinar therefore contributes to the current conversation and efforts in exploring the questions surrounding the evolution of music publishing in Nigeria, particularly with the momentum and growing realization that it is no longer the question whether there is a place for music publishing in the current structure of music industry in Nigeria but how best can this sector be activated. In this regard, the 4 keys that unlocks the treasures of music publishing system would be addressed; the law, the business, the owners and the money. What is the law? How does the business function? Who are the owners? Where is the money?
Mr Collin Gayle (CG) is a producer, artist manager and media executive per excellence. He was born in London to Jamaican parents and graduated from Stockton State University, New Jersey in the US. His career has recorded remarkable accomplishment from corporate America to the vast fields of entertainment industry: From his music and artist management firm, Rhythm Jazz Marketing in 1994, which roster included award-winning, platinum-certified artists and producers such as Jill Scott, Kenny Lattimore, Adriana Evans, Vidal Davis, and Andre Davis, his collaboration with Warner Urban Music which saw its expansion within Europe and Asia, enhancing the profiles of Madonna, Eric Benet, Jaheim, and other artists, his role as General Manager of International Marketing and Global Branding for 50 Cent and the G-Unit Brand in Europe and Asia, launching of G-Unit Reebok Sneakers, Formula 50/Vitamin Water, the movie Get Rich or Die Tryin’, and GUnit clothing, Gayle’s rich profile is packed with roles too numerous to recount. His foray into Africa since 2004 has left behind him decades of experience across music, media, and television and film focused on the intersection of African Culture and global best practices: His implementing the 2010 World cup Inaugural Event, 50 Cents Tour of Mozambique and South Africa with 50 Cents/Mandela publicized MTV show, T. D. Jakes Mega Fest in South Africa, pairing OF American comedian DeRay Davis with Africa’s own Basketmouth for a sold-out tour, Coca Cola-sponsored Ne-Yo music show with collabs across the continent, expansion of Essence magazine into the African marketplace and the first Essence Music Festival in Durban, among other initiatives and projects. He is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Africa Creative Agency (ACA), a full-service package providing content and platforms to live events rooted in the visionary branding platform that promotes the continent’s cultural profile through strategy and global best practices.
Emmanuel Bez Idakula (BEZ) is a Nigerian artist, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, composer, vocalist, lyricist, creator and mentor. Bez Idakula’s creative genus defies boundaries. As a young musician and performer, Bez started to fine-tune his sound, drawing inspiration from various genres: African beats, Hip Hop, soul and jazz unified to enrich his music and proudly giving life to a new genre, alternative soul. Ben’s music career has recorded impressive achievements: from his featuring in 2009/10 in the prestigious Hennessy Artistry Series, which celebrates musical innovation and artistry, to his first album, Super Sun, released to critical acclaim in 2011, followed by ‘Gbagyi Child’ and ‘The Light’ his sophomore and third albums respectively attesting to his mastery of new sounds, to the first African artist to premier a video on BET channel video, speaker at Harvard’s African Business Conference, key participant at Cannes, to his listing in 2014 as no 1 in PulseMagazine listing of ‘Top 12 musicians to loot out for’ and more recently, one of 11 artists globally selected in 2018 for MIDEM Artist Accelerator, world’s leading music event for creators, Ben’s profile is rich and inspiring as a leading ambassador and role model for African music and artists. He owns two record labels, Bez Idakula Global and Supersun. Ben Live, his celebrated series of live concerts continues to provide expression and passion for melodies through live music.
Dr. Ifeoma Oluwasemilore (FO) is an Intellectual Property specialist with focus on Copyright and related Rights, e-commerce and law of banking and negotiable instruments. She holds the master’s degree in library and information science at university of Ibadan and Ph. d in intellectual property law of OAU. She has considerable management, consulting, research and teaching experience. She is well published in local and international journals. As a scholar, she is recipient/fellow of numerous fellowships and resource including Copyright (Harvard Law School 2017, Creative Commons, Canada 2018, World Intellectual Property Organisation/World Trade Organisation (WIPO/WTO) Colloquium, Geneva, Switzerland, 2018, British Academy and the Centre for Law and Global Justice, Cardiff Law School, Centre for Commercial Law Studies, (CCLS) Queen Mary University of London, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), among others. She teaches intellectual property law at the Faculty of Law, Unilag
Akinyemi Ayinoluwa (AA) is a lawyer, consultant, Partner and Co-Founder at HighTower Solicitors and Advocates. He specializes in entertainment law and practice. Akinyemi’s primary focus is on the music industry where he represents multi-platinum artists, up-and-coming artists, producers, songwriters, managers, record labels, and production companies. Akinyemi himself is a songwriter, composer, and prior to his qualifying a lawyer, was a performer; he was the lead singer of ‘100 Degrees’ boy band. He is a well-known writer, blogger, speaker and contributor to many debates in the music industry including several contributions in the Nigerian Entertainment Today Website (NET).
Ayoyemi Lawal-Arowolo (ALA) is a Professor at the School of Law & Security Studies, Babcock University. Yemi has lived and studied across three Continents. She obtained her Bachelors’s in law degree at the Lagos State University (LASU) and was called to the bar in 1998. After practicing law briefly, she proceeded to the United States where she obtained her LL.M at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis and Ph. D at Kent University of Canterbury, United Kingdom. She is one of the pioneer staff at the Nigerian Copyright Institute, the research, and training arm of Nigerian Copyright Commission while an adjunct lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Nasarawa State University. She has several years of teaching, research, and consulting experience with a focus on intellectual property rights and knowledge systems in developing and African countries. She has written in peer-review journals and her recent works have been published in the European Intellectual Property Review and Queen Mary Journal of Intellectual Property, among others. She has recently served as Kent Law School fellow. She is partner and head, legal research at L & A Legal Consultants.
Olatunde Laoye (DOL) is Managing Partner L & A Legal Consultants. He is a consummate solicitor and expert negotiator at the transactional end of practice. He has extensive experience in corporate and commercial practice, intellectual property, media and entertainment, real estate, banking and financial services, project/venture capital, financing and maritime law and practice. He was Special Adviser to Director General/Chief Executive of Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency (NIMASA). He has previously worked in the financial services sector and still serves as Director and on the Board of companies with diverse business portfolio. He has negotiated and served as solicitor in major acquisitions, restructuring and venture arrangements in the capital market, private companies and licensing in the media and entertainment industry. He is a quiet achiever and has worked behind closed doors in many developments in the entertainment and media industry.
Adebambo Adewopo (AA) Of Counsel, L & A Legal Consultants. He is Professor of intellectual property at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, the first IP academic admitted to the Inner bar. Prior to taking the IP Chair at NIALS, he served as Director General of Nigerian Copyright Commission. He is widely published and practices extensively in the field.
